The Champions League round of 16 continues this week and there are few ties more intriguing than Liverpool v Bayern Munich.
While Jurgen Klopp’s men continue to press on with their Premier League title bid, the Champions League is a welcome distraction and they’ve been handed a boost with the news that Bayern are missing four players tomorrow.
Niko Kovac will be without Jerome Boateng who has flu while Arjen Robben and Corentin Tolisso are injured. On top of this, Thomas Muller is suspended while Manuel Neuer is only just back from a hand injury.
Winger Franck Ribery didn’t travel with the Bayern team as he became a father over the weekend though he’s expected to fly out separately and be included in the team. So it’s a youthful looking Bayern side that will line up at Anfield.
Bayern come into the game on the back of a win over Augsburg which included two goals from Kingsley Coman. There were concerns about Coman making the Liverpool game after he limped off but he was fit to travel with the squad to Liverpool.
Kovac said of his side’s display: “My team came back from behind twice, dominated the second half on scoring opportunities, and we deserved to win the game. We’ll have to be better in Liverpool. But when you play there, there’s a whole different focus. Maybe one or two of us were already thinking about Liverpool. That’s can’t be ruled out and isn’t good, but it’s human.”
Bayern Munich squad: Neuer, Sule, Hummels, Thiago, Martinez, Lewandowski, James, Rafinha, Goretzka, Davies, Jeong, Gnabry, Ulreich, Alaba, Coman, Awoudja, Kimmich, Mai, Sanches, Fruchtl, Shabani.
