Marco Silva has confirmed that Jonas Lossl is slowly “coming back” after his injury and will return “in the next few days”. The 30-year-old has been out of action with a calf problem and hasn’t made the matchday squad since Everton’s 1-0 win over Watford.
Maarten Stekelenburg has replaced him on the bench in the Everton’ last four games against Aston Villa (August 23), Lincoln City (August 28), Wolverhampton Wanderers (September 1) and Bournemouth (September 15), but it’s unknown if he’ll lose his place when Lossl returns.
Everton faces Sheffield United on September 21 and the Danish international should be fit in time to face the Blades after Silva’s comments to the Liverpool Echo: “Lossl is coming back step by step, he’s not ready yet but in the next few days he will be.”
Lossl recently admitted he wants to challenge Jordan Pickford for a starting place between the sticks too. Everton have shipped seven goals in their last three Premier League games, so the experienced stopper might have a chance to edge himself ahead of Pickford if Silva considers a change.
Everton do need something to stem the flow of conceded goals.
