Player who left Everton in the summer claims he could have joined Tottenham

Kevin Mirallas has told Belgian outlet RTBF that he could have joined Tottenham Hotspur or even Spanish side Atletico Madrid in January 2015 but chose to remain at Everton.

Reports at the time claimed Tottenham had made an enquiry over the Belgian star – as per the Telegraph – but little was made over whether Spurs actually came close to landing the 31 year-old. He scored 38 goals in 186 games for Everton.

Mirallas was in excellent form for 2014-15, scoring 11 goals from out wide in 36 appearances including strikes against Chelsea, Manchester United and indeed Tottenham. But he opted to remain at the Merseyside club.

Capped 60 times by Belgium, Mirallas has returned to his home country with Royal Antwerp where he has so far made three appearances after leaving Everton – and he claims he could have joined Spurs over four years ago.

“After the 2014 World Cup, I was enjoying my best season in England and had the opportunity to sign at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, but it was mid-season,” Mirallas said.

“The January transfer window is still special and Martinez did not want to let myself go. That’s where I missed the mark – I still feel that I have not made the most of my career.”
