Former Manchester United player Owen Hargreaves believes that United should consider the possibility of bringing Philippe Coutinho back to the Premier League.
Things have not gone according to plan for the Brazilian since he left Liverpool. As much as he was adamant to leave Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018, the Spanish club seem reluctant to take him back as his loan spell ends at the end of the season. And, neither are the club who he is on loan.
Before he left Liverpool, Coutinho was one of the most entertaining playmakers in the league. Any goalkeeper despised the Brazilan taking aim from outside the box. Capable to create as well as to score, Coutinho was a major part of Liverpool’s resurgence. While Liverpool went on to establish themselves as one of the dominant forces in the football world, Coutinho, on the other hand, struggled to find consistent form and minutes for his new team. He was shipped to the German champions, Bayern Munich, where he is spending his year on loan right now.
In the meanwhile, Barcelona brought Antoine Griezmann and it is quite clear that they want to bring Neymar back to the club. Coutinho is likely to be sold to generate funds for such transfer.
Coutinho is by no means a finished player, and he has a lot of admirers in the market. A lot of Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on his situation, but not many of them can afford the transfer fees to buy him. One of the clubs that can buy Coutinho is Manchester United. But, there is not a lot of interest from them for the player. However, former Red Devils Hargreaves believes that they should go for the 27-year-old playmaker as he “makes a lot of teams better”. Speaking to BT Sports, the former midfielder said:
I love his game, I love him as a player. He is obviously going through a bit of a tough time after leaving Liverpool. Barca didn’t work and Bayern hasn’t really worked, but there is still plenty of time and I would never count him out.
I would love to see him back in the Premier League. He makes a lot of teams better.
Premier League teams are probably the only ones with the capacity to sign him and, let’s be honest, when he was here he was a dream to watch.
If Liverpool are missing one thing it is probably a No10-ish player. I know they probably don’t need him because that front three are so good as is the balance in midfield.
There are a lot of rumours about Chelsea, even Man United. There are a lot of teams where if I was sporting director, surely his name is on a lot of teams’ lists to come in and make a big impact. The question is, does he do it on loan again or is it a sale, because it doesn’t look like he’s going to stay at Barcelona.
There is no doubt that Coutinho will make a lot of teams better but do United need the player is a more relevant question to be answered. United already have Bruno Fernandes to play in the No.10 position and he has proved to be more than capable to carry on in that role. United could do lot better by strengthening other positions.
